Description
Butea monosperma (Lam.) O. Kuntze. It is a deciduous tree with a somewhat crooked trunk, upto 15 m in height and 1.6-2.0 m (sometimes upto 3.8 m) in girth. Bark bluish-grey or light brown; leaves long-petioled, 3-foliolate, leaflets coriaceous, broadly obovate from a cuneate or deltoid base, glabrescent above, silky below; flower buds dark brown, flowers bright orange-red, sometimes yellow, in 15 cm long racemes on bare branches; pods pendulous, silky-tomentose, 10-13 cm long, containing one-seed at its apex; seeds flat, reniform, 3.3-3.8 cm x 2.2-2.5 cm. A red juice exudes from natural cracks and also from artificial incisions in the bark. It dries to form a gum known as Butea gum or Bengal kino {Chuniya goncf) and forms elongated tears or irregular, elongated masses, smaller than grains of barley, apparently black and opaque but actually ruby-red and translucent^ e9>.
