Lomefloxacin (HCl) is a difluorinated quinolone antibiotic. It has a broad spectrum of activity against aerobic gram negative bacteria. Lomefloxacin (HCl) is not available in any combination preparations. Lomefloxacin (HCl) is administered orally. Fluoroquinolones are extremely useful agents and an important therapeutic advance. They are relatively non-toxic, well tolerated broad spectrum agents. Their excellent bioavailibilty permits their use for treatment of variety of serious bacterial infections.

Absorption: Lomefloxacin (HCl) has an oral bioavailability is 98.5% (±0.5%), pre-systemic (first-pass) metabolism accounts for 1% (±1%).

Distribution: Lomefloxacin (HCl) has a volume of distribution is 1.8 l/kg. plasma protein binding is 10-12 %.

Elimination: plasma half-life is 7.1-8.2 hr, renal excretion is 70%(unchanged).

Indications

Lomefloxacin (HCl) is primarily indicated in conditions like Acute bacterial diarrhea, Chronic bronchitis, Pyelonephritis, Transurethral surgery, Uncomplicated cystitis, UTI.

Lomefloxacin (HCl) is also indicated for secondary conditions like Surgical infections.

Contraindications

Lomefloxacin (HCl) is contraindicated in conditions like Epilepsy, Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Lomefloxacin (HCl) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Seizures , Tendon rupture.

Lomefloxacin (HCl) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Agitation , Anorexia , Arthralgia, Asthenia , Confusion, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Hallucination , Headache, Increased intracranial pressure, Leukopenia, Myalgia, Nausea, Phlebitis , Pruritus , Vertigo.

Warnings / Precautions

Lomefloxacin should be used with caution in patients with history of epilepsy, kidney disease, tendon problems, nervous system disorders, liver disease and of any allergy, including drug allergies. It should be used with caution while driving or performing tasks requiring alertness because it produce dizziness or lightheaded. Limit alcohol intake. Because this may produce sensitivity to the sun, avoid prolonged sun exposure, wear protective clothing and use a sunscreen when outdoors. It should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.

Interference in Pathology

Lomefloxacin (HCl) may interfere in the diagnosis of Increased in Serum Aminotransferase, Increased Alkaline Phosphatase Levels.
