Absorption: Sulfadoxine has an oral bioavailability is 60.5% (±9.5%).

Distribution: Sulfadoxine has a volume of distribution is 0.13 l/kg. plasma protein binding is 94%.

Indications

Sulfadoxine is primarily indicated in conditions like Malaria prophylaxis, Severe falciparum malaria, Toxoplasmosis.

Sulfadoxine is also indicated for secondary conditions like Cholera, Pneumonia.

Contraindications

Sulfadoxine is contraindicated in conditions like Blood dyscrasias, Renal diseases, Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Sulfadoxine in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hepatitis , Pneumonitis .

Sulfadoxine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Mucocutaneous reaction. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Sulfadoxine are Nausea, Convulsions , Excitation , Anorexia , Vomiting, Hematological toxicity.

Sulfadoxine is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Fatigue, Feeling of fulness, Fever, Headache, Hepatic granulomata, Nausea and vomiting, Orthostatic hypotension, Photosensitivity, Polyneuritis, Pruritus , Rashes , Stomatitis.

Warnings / Precautions

Sulfadoxine should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy. It should be used with caution in patients with pre-existing blood disorders, anemia, liver disease, kidney disease, severe allergies, asthma or a history of seizures or any allergy, especially to sulfa medications.

Interference in Pathology

Sulfadoxine may interfere in the diagnosis of Complete blood cell count.
