Pharmacokinetics

Absorption: Sulfadimidine has an oral bioavailability is 96.5% (±1.5%).

Elimination: it is metabolised via Hepatic, plasma half-life is 1.5 - 5.5 hr, renal excretion is > 90%.

Indications

Sulfadimidine is primarily indicated in conditions like Meningitis, Urinary tract infection.

Contraindications

Sulfadimidine is contraindicated in conditions like Renal failure, Porphyrias.

Side Effects

Sulfadimidine in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Cholestatic jaundice , Hemolytic anemia , Epidermal necrolysis , Hemolytic anemia , Agranulocytosis , Arteritis , Thrombocytopenia , Hepatitis , Optic neuropathy , Pancreatitis , Vasculitis , Iritis , Retinal hemorrhage , Pulmonary eosinophilia .

Sulfadimidine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Stevens Johnson syndrome. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Sulfadimidine is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Anuria , Crystalluria , Cyanosis, Fever, Hematuria, Leukopenia, Nausea and vomiting, Rashes .

Warnings / Precautions

Allergic reaction to sulfa drugs may occur sometimes. Elderly adults are especially sensitive to the effects of sulfonamides. Severe skin and blood disorders may be more likely to occur in the elderly. The adverse effects may also be more likely to occur in patients who are taking diuretics together with these drugs
