Procaine Penicillin is a long acting penicillin similar to benzylpenicillin, used to treat a large variety of bacterial infections. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the drug at regular intervals of time throughout the day and night as prescribed. Procaine Penicillin is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the therapy may result in ineffective treatment.

Indications

Procaine Penicillin is primarily indicated in conditions like Bacterial infections, Gonorrhoea, Syphilis.

Procaine Penicillin is also indicated for secondary conditions like Endocarditis, Pneumonia.

Contraindications

Procaine Penicillin is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity to any component of product.

Side Effects

Procaine Penicillin in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hemolytic anemia , Jarisch herxheimer reaction , Renal impairment , Serum sickness .

Procaine Penicillin produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Convulsions , Hypotension, Hematological abnormalities, Renal damage, Cardiopulmonary arrest, Anaphylaxis . Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Procaine Penicillin is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abscess, Anxiety, Contact dermatitis, Hypertension , Pain , Skin rashes, Tachycardia.

Warnings / Precautions

Procain penicillin should be used with caution in patients with any kidney disease, stomach or intestine diseases or allergies to penicillins, other antibiotics, procainamide, ester-type anesthetics (e.g.lidocaine) or PABA products (e.g.methylparaben). It should be used with caution during pregnancy or lactation.

Interference in Pathology

Procaine Penicillin may interfere in the diagnosis of Flase +ve values of 17-OH-Corticosteroids, 17-Ketosteroids, 17-Ketogenic Steroids , It may interferes with Thyroid Function Test .
