Pheniramine (Maleate) is widely used as an ingredient in cold and cough preparations.

Indications

Pheniramine (Maleate) is primarily indicated in conditions like Allergy, Angioedema, Angiooedema, Asthma, Conjuctivitis, Dermatitis, Eczema, Hay fever, Perennial rhinitis, Rhinitis, Urticaria, Vasomotor rhinitis, Vertigo.

Contraindications

Pheniramine (Maleate) is contraindicated in conditions like Prostatic hypertrophy, Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Pheniramine (Maleate) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hallucinations .

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Pheniramine (Maleate) are Hyperthermia, Sedation , Dry mouth, Hallucinations , Dizziness, Dermatitis , Toxic psychosis , Muscular weakness, Palpitations .

Pheniramine (Maleate) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Blurred vision, Constipation , Coordination disturbances, Dizziness, Dry mouth, Lassitude , Muscle weakness, nervousness, Sedation , Tachycardia, Tremors, Urinary retention.

Warnings / Precautions

Pheniramine should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or lactation. It should be used with caution in patients with any eye problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, thyroid disorder, heart disease, asthma or allergies, especially to sulfites. should not be coadminister in patient who are already on a MAOI therapy because MAOI intensify or prolong the cholinergic effect of antihistamine and therefore pheniramine should be avoided in such conditions.
