Mecillinam
Mecillinam is a derivative of amidinopenicillanic acid. Unlike benzylpenicillin and related antibiotics, Mecillinam is active against many Gram -ve bacteria in perticular Enterobacteriaceae including Escherichia coli, Enterobacter, Klebsiella, Salmonella and Shigella spp.; Mecillinam is less active against Neisseria spp. and Haemophilus influenzae. It interferes with the synthesis of the bacterial cell wall by binding with a different penicillin-binding protein from benzylpenicillin. Mecillinam is inactivated by beta-lactamases, but is more stable than ampicillin.
Primary Characteristics
It is of Semi Synthetic origin and belongs to Penicillin.
It belongs to Peptidoglycan synthesis inhibitor pharmacological group on the basis of mechanism of action and also classified in Antibiotics pharmacological group.
