Magnesium hydroxide (and oxide) is an antacid. It neutrilizes the gastric acidity and used in the treatment of peptic ulcer. It also acts as a saline cathartic and used in constipation. It increases the intestinal activity and cause defecation.

Indications

Magnesium Oxides and Hydroxides is primarily indicated in conditions like Constipation, Digitalis toxicity, Gastric acidity, Hypomagnesaemia, Peptic ulcer, Pre-eclampsia.

Contraindications

Magnesium Oxides and Hydroxides is contraindicated in conditions like Allergy, Hypersensitivity to any component of product.

Side Effects

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Magnesium Oxides and Hydroxides are Cardiac arrhythmias, Respiratory depression, Cardiac arrest.

Magnesium Oxides and Hydroxides is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Ataxia, Blurred vision, Diarrhea, Muscular weakness.

Warnings / Precautions

Do not exceed prescribed dose because it will cause diarrhea.Magnesium salts should be used with caution in patients with stomach disorders and allergies.

Interference in Pathology

Magnesium Oxides and Hydroxides may interfere in the diagnosis of Estimation of Urinary & Serum Calcium , Bersy Procedure for Estimating serum alkaline phosphatase by bromosulphthalein .
