Isoxsuprine is a vasodilator which also stimulates beta-adrenergic receptors. It causes direct relaxation of vascular smooth muscle and its vasodilating action is greater on the artries supplying skeletal muscle than on those supplying skin. It also produces positive inotropic and chronotropic effect. It has been used to arrest premature labour but drugs with a more selective action on beta-2 receptors such as Ritodrine are now generally preferred.

Side Effects

Isoxsuprine in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Rashes, Allergic reactions , Fetal Tachycardia.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Isoxsuprine are Nausea, Fainting , Light headedness, Weakness .

Isoxsuprine is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Chest pain, dizziness, Flushed skin, Hypotension , Irregular heart beat, Nausea and vomiting, Pulmonary edema, Rashes , Tachycardia.

Warnings / Precautions

Isoxsuprine should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or lactation. It should be used with caution in patients with any blood disorders, bleeding episodes or allergies. Cautions should be taken when driving because Isoxsuprine may cause dizziness. Rise slowly from a sitting or lying position to avoid falling.
