Iotroxate (Meglumine) is iodinated, water soluble radiological contrast agent for intravenous cholangiography and cholecystography. Chemically Iotroxate (Meglumine) is N-methylglucamino-3,3-(3, 6, 9-trioxaundecanedioyldi-imino) bis (2, 4, 6-tri-iodobenzoate). Iotroxate (Meglumine) is prepared by chemical synthesis and not available in any combination preparations.

Side Effects

Iotroxate (Meglumine) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Nephrotoxicity , Hepatotoxicity , Hepatotoxicity , Sickle crises in sicklers , Hypertensive crises in existing pheochromocytoma.

Iotroxate (Meglumine) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Anaphylactoid reactions , Bronchospasm , Bronchospasm, Acute Renal Failure , Angioneurotic edema, Acute renal failure, Obstructive nephropathy, Angioneurotic edema, Circulatory collapse, circulatory collapse. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Iotroxate (Meglumine) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Faintness , Flushing, Headache, Nausea and vomiting, Restlessness, Sedation .

Warnings / Precautions

Iotroxate should be administered with great caution in patients with asthma and history of allergy, and should be avoided to patients with known hypersensitivity to iodine or contrast media. Caution is needed in patients with severe hepatic (liver) or renal impairment or who may be at a risk of renal failure. Dehydration patients should have their fluid and electrolyte balance corrected before administration of contrast medium. It should be used with extreme caution in patients with hypertension, cardiac disease, pheochromocytoma, sickle-cell anemia or hypothyroidism. Avoid use during pregnancy.

Interference in Pathology

Iotroxate (Meglumine) may interfere in the diagnosis of Thyroid Function Test , Sulphosalicylic acid test , False +ve result of Urinary Glucose , Test with Cupric Sulphate and prolong various measure of clotting, coagulation cascade .
