Iopanoic Acid is iodinated radiographic contrast medium that after oral administration is absorbed from the deudenum, conjugated with glucoronic acid in the liver and secreted in bile. Iopanoic Acid is used as a radiopaque medium in cholecystography and for oral cholangiograghy.

Indications

Iopanoic Acid is primarily indicated in conditions like Cholecystography, Epilepsy (monotherapy), Radiological contrast agent, Vestibular disorders.

Iopanoic Acid is also indicated for secondary conditions like Hyperthyroidism.

Contraindications

Iopanoic Acid is contraindicated in conditions like Cardiovascular disease, Malabsorption.

Side Effects

Iopanoic Acid in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Thrombocytopenia , Renal impairment , Thyrotoxicosis , Urate nephropathy , Hepatic impairment .

Iopanoic Acid produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Anaphylactoid reactions , Coronary insufficiency, Cardiovascular collapse. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Iopanoic Acid are Diarrhea, Nausea & vomiting.

Iopanoic Acid is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal pain, Cramps , Diarrhea, Dizziness, Dysuria, Headache, Heart burn, Hypersensitivity reactions, Nausea and vomiting, Pruritus , Rashes , Sore throat, Urticaria.

Warnings / Precautions

Avoid use of iopanoic acid in patients with severe renal (kidney) or hepatic (liver) disease. Dose higher than 3gm should not be given to patients with renal impairment. Avoid use in presence of acute gastro-intestinal disease, as it may impair the absorption. It should be used with caution in patients with history of hypersensitivity to iodine, or other contrast media, hyperthyroidism, hyperuricaemia.

Interference in Pathology

Iopanoic Acid may interfere in the diagnosis of Thyroid Function Test , False +ver result of Sulphosalicylic acid test , Pisano Test , Serum Urate Measurement , Increases Sulphobromophthaline retention , Increases Serum Bilirubin .
