Gemifloxacin belongs to Flouroquinolone, which are used for management of various bacterial infections. It kills a variety of bacteria, and prevent their reproduction and is often used for the treatment of infections all over the body. However, they are not considerably good for the management of viral infections like flu. Gemifloxacin inhibits the synthesis of DNA by inhibiting DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV is the enzyme which is needed for bacterial growth.

Elimination: it is metabolised via hepatic, plasma half-life is 7 hr, renal excretion is 36.

Indications

Gemifloxacin is primarily indicated in conditions like Bacterial infections, Chronic bronchitis, Cold, Lower respiratory tract infections, Pneumonia, Upper respiratory tract infections.

Gemifloxacin is also indicated for secondary conditions like Diarrhoea.

Contraindications

Gemifloxacin is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Gemifloxacin in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Jaundice , Jaundice , Seizures , Bleeding , Diarrhea, Tremors .

Gemifloxacin produces potentially life-threatening effects which include QT prolongation. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Gemifloxacin are Convulsions , Kidney failure, Confusion , Stomach upset, Headache, Delusions .

Gemifloxacin is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal pain, Diarrhea, Dizziness, Irritability, Nausea and vomiting, Rashes , Restlessness.

Warnings / Precautions

Should be use with caution in patients with epilepsy or history of seizures, pregnant or breastfeeding patients.Gemifloxacin should be stopped at the first sign of a skin rash or any other allergic reaction nad seek for medical doctor. Though rare, serious and seldom fatal allergic reactions have been reported, even after the first dose.

Interference in Pathology

Gemifloxacin may interfere in the diagnosis of Aspartate Aminotransferase Assay , Bilirubin (increased level), Increased level of alanine aminotransferase, GGT Increased.
