NITROPRUSSIDE is a vasodilator that relaxes blood vessels. It reduces blood pressure, increases the blood and oxygen supply to the heart, and decreases the workload on the heart. Nitroprusside helps to reduce blood pressure in a hypertensive (high blood pressure) emergency, and helps to lower the blood pressure during surgery to prevent excessive bleeding. Nitroprusside is not for long-term use. Generic nitroprusside injections are available.

Indications

Nitroprusside is primarily indicated in conditions like Congestive heart failure, Hypertension, Hypertensive crisis.

Nitroprusside is also indicated for secondary conditions like Pre-eclampsia.

Contraindications

Nitroprusside is contraindicated in conditions like Renal failure.

Side Effects

Nitroprusside produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Tachycardia. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Nitroprusside are Cyanide toxicity.

Nitroprusside is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Confusion, dizziness, Flushing, Headache, Hypotension, Pain , Palpitations, Redness, Sweating .

Warnings / Precautions

Blood pressure should be frequently monitored and recorded. Should be use with caution in patients with renal function. Because of its rapid onset, efficacy and short duration of action, nitroprusside should be administerd by infusiob pump and arterial blood pressure should be continuosly monitored via intra arterial recording. It Should be used with caution in hepatic impairment
