A fibrous material containing Hemicellulose 40%, cellulose 20%, lignin 15%, and pectin 5%. It is an ideal bulking agent. It not only absorbs free water in the small intestine but also entraps a much large amount of water in the form of bacteria and cells inside the distal gut.

Dosage

In most cases the maximal tolerated dose will be 25 mg t.i.d. In very rare cases, a 200 mg dose has been reached .

Side Effects

Tetrabenazine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome , Depression. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Tetrabenazine is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Agitation , Anxiety, Confusion, Dizziness, Drowsiness, Dystonia , Fatigue, Insomnia, Nausea, nervousness, Parkinsonism, Rashes , Sweating .

It should be used with caution while engaging in activities requiring alertness. Dose may be increased gradually acccording to the response of patient. Dizziness or vertigo may affect the performance of skilled tasks (e.g driving)

Interference in Pathology

Tetrabenazine may interfere in the diagnosis of Elevation in ALT or AST.
