Cephazolin is a first-generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Cephalosporins are derivatives of 7-aminocephalosporic acid and are closely related to penicillins in structure. Cephalosporins have a six membered sulfur containing ring adjoining a ß lactam ring. Cephazolin is effective in a large variety of bacterial infections, such as respiratory tract, skin and urinary tract infections. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the medication at regular interval of time throughout the day and night as prescribed. Cephazolin (Na) is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the therapy, it may result in ineffective treatment.

Side Effects

Cephazolin (Na) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Convulsions , Thrombocytopenia , Hypersensitivity reactions , Eosinophilia , Eosinophilia , Leucopenia, Neutropenia .

Cephazolin (Na) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Pseudomembranous colitis , Anaphylactic reactions. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Cephazolin (Na) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Anorexia , Diarrhea, Genital and anal pruritus, Genital moniliasis, Nausea, Rise in blood urea levels, Transient rise in SGPT & SGOT .

Warnings / Precautions

Cephazolin should be used with caution in patients with impaired kidney or liver function. Appropriate measure should be taken if secondary infection occurs. It should be used with caution (if contains tartrazine) in patients with aspirin hypersensitivity, because it may cause allergic reactions (including bronchial asthma).

Interference in Pathology

Cephazolin (Na) may interfere in the diagnosis of False +ve Coombs Test , Reversed phase HPLC method for the analysis of theophylline , Positve Coombs test, interfere with cross matching of Blood , False + ve reaction to benedicts & fehling reagents.
