Sulfisoxazole is a short acting sulfonamide antibiotic. Sulfisoxazole is used notably in the treatment of chlamydial infections. Sulfisoxazole is used usually orally. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the medication at regular interval of time throughout the day and night as prescribed. Sulfisoxazole is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the therapy, it may result in ineffective treatment.

Absorption: Sulfisoxazole has an oral bioavailability is 96% (±14%).

Distribution: Sulfisoxazole has a volume of distribution is 0.15(0.13-0.17)l/kg. plasma protein binding is 85 - 90 %.

Elimination: plasma half-life is 5 - 8 hr, renal excretion is 95 %.

Indications

Sulfisoxazole is primarily indicated in conditions like Chlamydial infections, Nocardiosis, Otitis media, Uncomplicated UTIs.

Contraindications

Sulfisoxazole is contraindicated in conditions like Urinary obstruction, Porphyria, Pregnancy, Neonates, Hypersensitivity to any component of product.

Side Effects

Sulfisoxazole in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hematuria, Interstitial nephritis , Lumber pain, Nephrotoxicity , Blood dyscrasias , Crystalluria , Oliguria , Anuria, Tubular necrosis.

Sulfisoxazole produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Renal failure, Stevens Johnson syndrome, Toxic epidermal necrolysis. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Sulfisoxazole is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Anorexia , Diarrhea, Hypersensitivity reactions, Nausea and vomiting, Photosensitivity reactions, Pruritus , Rashes .

Warnings / Precautions

It should be used with caution in patients with medical history including liver or kidney disease, blood disorders or of any drug allergy. This may makes patients more prone to sunburn, wear protective clothing and (PABA-free) sunscreen when outdoors. It should be used only if clearly needed during pregnancy or lactation.

Interference in Pathology

Sulfisoxazole may interfere in the diagnosis of Urinanalysis , False +ve result of Urinary Glucose , Complete blood cell count, Renal function Test, False-positive test for protein in urine.
