Oxacillin

Drug #1488

Oxacillin is an isoxazolyl antistaphylococcal penicillin used similarly to fluclit. Oxacillin is mainly used in the treatment of infections caused by penicillinase-resistant strains of staphylococci, including bacteremia, skin and soft-tissue infections, respiratory tract infections, bone and joint infections, and urinary tract infections. It inhibits the third and final stage of bacterial cell wall synthesis by preferentially binding to specific penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs) that are located inside the bacterial cell wall. Like all ß-lactam antibiotics, it's ability to interfere with PBP-mediated cell wall synthesis ultimately leads to cell lysis. It was approved by the FDA in 1962.
