Gabapentin is an antiepileptic that is used as an adjunctive treatment of partial seizures with or without secondary generalisation. Gabapentin is also used for the treatmnet of neuropathic pain.

Distribution: Gabapentin has a volume of distribution is 57 litre. plasma protein binding is negligible.

Elimination: plasma half-life is 5 - 7 hr, renal excretion is ~ 60 % unchanged.

Indications

Gabapentin is primarily indicated in conditions like Epilepsy, Neuropathic pain, Partial seizures, Partial seizures with 2ndry generalization.

Contraindications

Gabapentin is contraindicated in conditions like Myoclonic seizures, Penconceptual period.

Side Effects

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Gabapentin are Diarrhea, Slurred speech.

Gabapentin is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abnormal thinking, Amnesia , Arthralgia, Asthenia , Ataxia, Confusion, Diplopia, dizziness, Drowsiness, Dyspepsia , Fatigue, Flatulence, Headache, Leucopenia, Purpura, Rashes , Somnolence , Tremor, Unsteadiness , UTI , Weight gain.

Warnings / Precautions

It should be use cautiously in patients with impaired renal function. Withdrawl of therapy or transition to or from another type of antiepileptic therapy should be made gradually to avoid precipitating an increase in the frequency of seizures.

Interference in Pathology

Gabapentin may interfere in the diagnosis of False +ve dipstick test for Urinary Protein.
