Naphazoline is a sympathomimetic agent with marked alpha-adrenergic activity. Chemically Naphazoline is 2-(1-naphthylmethyl)-2-imidazoline. Naphazoline is used topically on nasal mucosa where its vasoconstrictor effect leads to reduce secretion and mucosal swelling (e.g in allergic rhinitis). Prolonged use may lead to rebound nasal congestion and secretion. Naphazoline is also used in allergic and inflammtory condition of eyes.

Indications

Naphazoline is primarily indicated in conditions like Corneal vascularity, Hyperaemia, Itching, Nasal congestion.

Naphazoline is also indicated for secondary conditions like Sinusitis.

Contraindications

Naphazoline is contraindicated in conditions like Asthma, Diabetes mellitus, Narrow-angle glaucoma.

Side Effects

Naphazoline in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Rebound congestion , Increased IOP (intraocular pressure).

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Naphazoline are Bradycardia, Coma, Sweating , Sweating, CNS depression.

Naphazoline is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Blurring of vision, Dizziness, Dry mouth, Headache, Irritation, Mydriasis, Nausea, Nervousness, Sneezing, Stinging on application.

Warnings / Precautions

Use topical decongestant only in acute conditions, not longer than 3 to 5 days. Naphazoline should be used sparingly in all patients, especially in infants, children and in cardiac patients.
