Benzalkonium (Cl) is a mixture of alkylbenzyl dimethylammonium chloride. Benzalkonium (Cl) is a rapidly acting surface disinfectant, antiseptic and detergent active against both gram negative and gram positive bacterias and certain viruses, fungi, yeasts and protozoa. Benzalkonium (Cl) is applied topically to the skin and mucous membranes. But recently Benzalkonium (Cl) is recommended that it should not be used as a antiseptic on skin because outbreak of infections have occurred due to bacterial growth.

Indications
Benzalkonium (Cl) is primarily indicated in conditions like Bladder irrigation, Ear,eye,nose and throat irrigation, Gingivitis, Perodontal diseases, Preoperative disinfection of unbroken skin, Stomatitis, Thrush, Tonsillitis, Urethral irrigation.
Benzalkonium (Cl) is also indicated for secondary conditions like Burns, Wounds.
Contraindications
Benzalkonium (Cl) is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects
The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Benzalkonium (Cl) are Vomiting, Coma, Collapse, Death , Convulsions , Muscular weakness, Restlessness , Cyanosis, Dyspnea, Apprehension , Paralysis of respiratory muscle .
Benzalkonium (Cl) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Allergic contact dermatitis .
