Bendrofluazide is a diuretic. Bendrofluazide is used in hypertention to lower the high blood pressure. It increases urination and is used to treat fluid overload (abnormal accumulation of fliuid in body cavities, tissue etc). It acts by reducing sodium reabsorption in the kidney. Less potent than frusemide and mersalyl but has longer action. Bendrofluazide is effective orally.

Indications

Bendrofluazide is primarily indicated in conditions like Diabetes insipidus, Disorders of calcium balance, Heart failure, Hypertension, Oedema, Peripheral edema.

Contraindications

Bendrofluazide is contraindicated in conditions like Diabetes mellitus, Renal failure, Hypokalaemia, Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Bendrofluazide in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Thrombocytopenia , Cholestatic jaundice , Aplastic anemia , Hemolytic anemia , Acute interstitial pulmonary edema , Skin rashes , Photosensitivity , Necrotizing vasculitis .

Bendrofluazide produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia, Cardiac arrhythmias, Abnormal lipid profile. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Bendrofluazide are Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia , Volume depletion, Hypotension.

Bendrofluazide is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Dizziness, Gout, Headache, Impotence, Nausea.

Warnings / Precautions

Bendrofluazide should be used with caution in patients with diabetes, kidney or liver disease or any drug allergy. Caution must be observed when eating large amounts of food high in potassium such as bananas, baked potatoes, raisins, cooked spinach and other foods. Alcoholic beverages may increase the effects of this drug, causing dizziness or lightheadedness, so limit alcohol intake. Use caution while engaging in activities requiring alertness. This drug changes fluid balance, cause dizziness, if change from a lying to a standing position too rapidly, avoid this by sitting up a few minutes before rising. It should be used with caution during pregnancy or lactation.

Interference in Pathology

Bendrofluazide may interfere in the diagnosis of Apparent polycythemia with an elevated hematocrit .
