Thioridazine (HCl) is a phenothiazine, similar to chlorpromazine. Thioridazine (HCl) is used in the treatment of certain mental disorders such as psychosis, confusion and agitation.

Elimination: it is metabolised via Hepatic, plasma half-life is 16 - 36 hr, renal excretion is < 10 %.

Indications

Thioridazine (HCl) is primarily indicated in conditions like Anxiety, Hypomania, Mania, Psychosis, Schizophrenia.

Thioridazine (HCl) is also indicated for secondary conditions like Epilepsy, Schizophrenia and other psychoses.

Contraindications

Thioridazine (HCl) is contraindicated in conditions like Blood dyscrasias, Coma, Cardiovascular disease, CNS depression.

Side Effects

Thioridazine (HCl) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Acute dyskinesia , Pigmentory retinopathy , Tardive dyskinesia .

Thioridazine (HCl) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Agranulocytosis, Arrhythmias, Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome , Cardiac Arrest . Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Thioridazine (HCl) are Coma, Cardiac arrhythmias, Shallow breathing, Loss of reflexes, Hyperflexia , Hypotension, Epileptic seizures, Motor restlessness.

Thioridazine (HCl) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Blurred vision, Constipation , Drowsiness, Dry mouth, Nasal congestion , Postural hypotension, Sedation , Sexual dysfunction, Tachycardia, Termors, Urinary retensionX.

Warnings / Precautions

Thioridazine should be used with caution in patients exposed to extreme heat or phosphorus insecticides, patients in state of alcohol withdrawal, patients with history of peptic ulcer, allergic reactions, with renal (kidney) impairment, prostatic hypertrophy. Photosensitization may occur, caution patients against exposure to sunlight or UV light. Discontinue use atleast 48 hr before myelography.

Interference in Pathology

Thioridazine (HCl) may interfere in the diagnosis of Frings method for measuring urinary Alkaloids and Barbiturates , Trindes Method for measuring Urinary Salicylate , Urinary Tests for Pregnancy .
