Absorption: Mesalazine has an oral bioavailability is 14% (±14%).

Distribution: Mesalazine has a plasma protein binding is 50 %.

Elimination: it is metabolised via Hepatic, plasma half-life is 40mins, renal excretion is 30-50 %.

Indications

Mesalazine is primarily indicated in conditions like Crohn's disease, Ulcerative colitis.

Contraindications

Mesalazine is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Mesalazine in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hepatitis , Bronchospasm , Bronchospasm , Nephrotic syndrome , Blood dyscrasias , blood dyscrasias.

Mesalazine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Myocarditis , Pericarditis . Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Mesalazine is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal discomfort, Alopecia, Chest pain, Diarrhea, Fever, Hair loss, Headache, Leukopenia, Nausea, Paresthesias, Rashes , Vomiting .

Warnings / Precautions

Avoid mesalazine in patients with impaired renal function or salicylate or sulfite hypersensitivity. It should be used with caution in elderly. Avoid use in children under 2 years of age. If blood dyscrasia is suspected treatment should be stopped immediately and blood count should performed.

Interference in Pathology

Mesalazine may interfere in the diagnosis of Assay methods for Glucose, Bilirubin, Urobilinogen, Phenylketones, VMA and Urinary Proteins .
