Iodine
Iodine and Iodine releasing agents are widely used as topical broad spectrm antiseptics and as disinfectant and sanitizers. Elemental Iodine was discovered in 1811 and is ablack blue material. Elemental Iodine is highly irritant and corrosive but formulation as an iodophor greatly reduces these unwanted adveres effects. In body Iodine is used in the production of thyroid hormone. When the gland is overactive Iodine is given orally to suppress thyroid function prior to surgical removal of thyroid tissue

Indications
Iodine is primarily indicated in conditions like Hyperthyroid crisis, Hyperthyroidism, Sporotrichosis, Thyroid involution induction, Thyrotoxicosis.
Iodine is also indicated for secondary conditions like Thyroidectomy.
Contraindications
Iodine is contraindicated in conditions like Asthma, Hyperkalaemia, Acne vulgaris, Tuberculosis, Goiter, Bronchitis, Vasculitis, Thomsen's disease, Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects
Iodine in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Eosinophilia , Eosinophilia , Hypothyroidism , Goitre , Goitre.
Iodine produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Neutropenia . Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.
The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Iodine are Vomiting, Diarrhea, Coma, Fever, Delirium, Renal failure, Abdominal pain, Ventricular arrhythmias, Metallic taste, Lactic acidosis.
Iodine is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Arthralgia, Bronchitis , Conjunctivitis, Coryza, Enlargement of salivary gland, Headache, Iodine toxicity, Salivation , Skin rashes, Sneezing, Urticaria, Vasculitis.

Interference in Pathology
Iodine may interfere in the diagnosis of Thyroid Function Test by supressing radio-iodine uptake from thyroid gland. .
