Paraformaldehyde is a disinfectant and antiseptic with the properties and uses of formaldehyde and is used as a source of formaldehyde. To disinfect rooms it has been vapourised by heating. Tablets prepared for this purpose should be coloured by the addition of a suitable blue dye. Paraformaldehyde has been used in lozenges for the treatment of minor throat infections. In dentistry, it has been used as an obtundent for sensitive dentine and as an antiseptic in mummifying pastes and for root canals.

Side Effects

Paraformaldehyde in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Allergic asthma , Pneumonitis , Contact dermatitis .

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Paraformaldehyde are Vomiting, Intense pain, Death , Convulsions , Anuria, Mucous necrosis, Vertigo .

Paraformaldehyde is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Bronchitis , Cough , Dysphagia, Laryngeal spasm, Pneumonia .

Warnings / Precautions

If swallowed, induce vomiting immediately as directed by medical personnel. Never give anything by mouth to an unconscious person. If inhaled, remove to fresh air. If not breathing, give artificial respiration. If breathing is difficult, give oxygen. In case of contact, immediately flush eyes or skin with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes. In all cases call a physician. Do not breathe dust or vapor. Do not get in eyes, on skin, or on clothing.
