A newer 5 HT-4 partial agonist. It is used in the treatment of patients with irritable bowel syndrome with predominant constipation. Tegaserod appears to be an extremely safe agent.

Indications

Tegaserod is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Tegaserod is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Backache , Diarrhea, Dizziness, Flatulence, Headache, Influenza like syndrome , Nausea.

Warnings / Precautions

Special care is necessary in patients with severe hepatic impairment and in patients with lactose intolerance, Pregnancy and Breast feeding.

Interference in Pathology

Tegaserod may interfere in the diagnosis of Elevations of SGPT and SGOT , Increased concentration of creatinine kinase.
