Imatinib Mesylate is a protein-tyrosine kinase inhibitor, an antineoplastic (anticancer) drug. Imatinib Mesylate is licensed for the treatment of chronic myeloid leukaemia (CML) in chronic phase where first-line therapy is failed to give adequate response. It should be used only under specialist supervision.

Side Effects

Imatinib Mesylate in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Fluid retension , Erythema multiforme, Acute renal failure , Oedema , Erythema multiforme .

Imatinib Mesylate produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Thrombocytopenia , Neutropenia . Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Imatinib Mesylate is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Anorexia , CNS disturbances , Dizziness, Dry cough, Dry mouth, Dyspnoea, Fatigue, GI bleeding, GI disturbance, Headache, influenza, Insomnia, Lacrimation, Muscle cramps, Paresthesias, Pyrexia , Skin reactions, Taste disturbances, Ulceration .

Warnings / Precautions

Imatinib should be used with caution in pregnancy (avoid unless potential benefit outweighs risk).It should be taken with food & a large glass of water to minimize gastrointestinal irritation.

Interference in Pathology

Imatinib Mesylate may interfere in the diagnosis of Liver Function Test (LFT) , Increased Alkaline Phosphatase Levels, Elevation in ALT or AST.
