Loracarbef is an antibiotic, belongs to new class of beta-lactams, the carbacephins. Loracarbef is a synthetic structural analogue of cefaclor (a second-generation cephalosporin), but more stable against ß-lactamases. it's antimicrobial spectrum is similar to that of cefaclor. The clinical efficacy of Loracarbef is comparable to that of amoxicillin and amoxicillin/clavulanic acid in patients with upper or lower respiratory tract infections and is also comparable to cefaclor in treating patients with lower respiratory tract, skin, skin structure, and urinary tract infections. It was approved by FDA in December 1991.

Side Effects

Loracarbef in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Thrombocytopenia , Maculopapular rash , Leukopenia, Pseudomembranous colitis , Eosinophilia .

Loracarbef produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Acute intestinal nephritis. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Loracarbef is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal pain, Anorexia , Diarrhea, Dizziness, Headache, Rashes , Vomiting .

Warnings / Precautions

Loracarbef should not be given to patients known to be hypersensitive to it or to other beta-lactams because of the possibility of cross-sensitivity. It should be used cautiously in patients with impaired renal function. A reduction in dose may be required. Renal and hematological status should be monitored during prolonged and high dose therapy.

Interference in Pathology

Loracarbef may interfere in the diagnosis of +ve Coomb`s tests, Elevation of LDH.
