A pro-drug of acyclovir, used for herpes zoster and herpes simplex infections of the skin and mucous membranes, It is used for preventing cytomegalovirus diseases following renal transplantation. Non-dose-limiting confusion and hallucinations are the most frequent side effects.

Indications

Valaciclovir (HCl) is primarily indicated in conditions like Herpes simplex, Herpes simplex infections, Herpes zoster, Prevention of cytomagalovirus disease, Prevention of cytomagalovirus disease (following renal transplantation), Prevention of cytomegalovirus disease.

Valaciclovir (HCl) is also indicated for secondary conditions like Prevention of cytomagalo virus.

Side Effects

Valaciclovir (HCl) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Thrombocytopenic purpura , Hemolytic uremic syndrome.

Valaciclovir (HCl) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Dizziness, Headache, Nausea.

Warnings / Precautions

It should be used with caution in patients with renal impairment and doses should be adjusted accorging to creatinine clearance. This medication should be used with caution during pregnancy and lactation.
