Nafcillin is a semisynthetic penicillin, which is highly resistant to penicillanase enzyme, with uses, actions similar to those of flucloxacillin. Nafcillin is used in the treatment of infections caused by penicillinase-producing strains of staphylococci, that are resistant to benzylpenicillin.

Indications

Nafcillin is primarily indicated in conditions like Bone and joint infection, Endocarditis, Skin infections, Staphylococcal infections.

Nafcillin is contraindicated in conditions like Hypersensitivity.

Side Effects

Nafcillin in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hemolytic anemia , Hypotension , Thrombophlebitis , Pruritis , Cholestatic jaundice , Hemolytic anemia , Hepatitis , Bronchospasm , Urticaria , Neutropenia , Prolongation of bleeding time .

Nafcillin produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Convulsions , CNS toxicity, Anaphylaxis . Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

Nafcillin is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal pain, Hypersensitivity reactions, Inflammation, Pain , Rashes , Skin RashX, Swelling , Wheezing .

Warnings / Precautions

It should be used with caution in patients with history of allergy, especially to drugs and in patient hypersensitive to penicillin. Care is necessary if very high dose of penicillin is given, especially if renal function is poor. Renal and hematological status should be monitored during prolonged and high dose therapy.

Interference in Pathology

Nafcillin may interfere in the diagnosis of Urinanalysis , Liver Function Tests , Periodic BUN and creatinine determinations.
