Cefamandole is a second generation cephalosporin antibiotic. Cephalosporins are derivatives of 7-aminocephalosporic acid and are closely related to penicillins in structure. Cephalosporins have a six membered sulfur containing ring adjoining a ß lactam ring. Cefamandole is used to treat a large variety of bacterial infections, Cefamandole (Na) is less effective against gram positive bacteria than first generation drugs. Cefamandole (Na) is usually given for surgical infection prophylaxis. Antibiotics require constant drug level in body for therapeutic effect. This is achieved by taking the medication at regular interval of time throughout the day and night as prescribed. Cefamandole (Na) is important to take the drug for the full time period as prescribed. If you discontinue the therapy it may result in ineffective treatment.

Side Effects

Cefamandole (Na) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Maculopapular rash , Eosinophilia , Hypersensitivity reactions , Drug fever , Thrombophlebitis , Urticaria , Phlebitis.

Cefamandole (Na) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Diarrhea, Nausea, Vomiting .

Warnings / Precautions

Cefamandol should be used with caution in patients with impaired kidney or liver function. Appropriate measure should be taken if secondary infection occurs. It should be used with caution (if contains tartrazine) in patients with aspirin hypersensitivity, because it may cause allergic reactions (including bronchial asthma).

Interference in Pathology

Cefamandole (Na) may interfere in the diagnosis of False +ve reaction for glucose in urine with Benedicts or Fehlings or Clinitest Tabs. , False +ve results for proteinuria using acid and denaturization precipation test. .
