Idarubicin (HCl) is antineoplastic agent or anticancer drug. Idarubicin (HCl) is a synthetic analog of anthracycline daunorubicin. Idarubicin differ from daunorubicin by the absence of methoxy group at the C-4 position. Idarubicin (HCl) is effective in the treatment of different types of cancers. Idarubicin (HCl) is used in combination of other anticancer drugs to obtain best therapeutic effects and to reduce toxicity or side effects. It has less potentially less cardiotoxicity than doxorubicin and daunorubicin.Idarubicin (HCl) is administered orally or intravenously.

Absorption: Idarubicin (HCl) has an oral bioavailability is 37.5% (±12.5%).

Distribution: Idarubicin (HCl) has a volume of distribution is 1530-1700 l/square meter. plasma protein binding is 97% & active metabolite 94%.

Elimination: it is metabolised via both hepatic & extrapepatic, plasma half-life is 20-22 hr, renal excretion is <5.

Side Effects

Idarubicin (HCl) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Urticaria , Neutropenia , Seizures , Cardiomyopathy , Pancytopenia , Leukopenia.

Idarubicin (HCl) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Congestive heart failure, Myelosuppression , Fatal arrhythmias. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Idarubicin (HCl) are Arrhythmias.

Idarubicin (HCl) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal pain, Alopecia, Anemia, Bullous rash, Cardiac arrhythmias , Diarrhea, Discoloration of urine, Mucositis, Nausea, Sinus tachycardia, StomatitisX, Supraventricular tachycardia, Vomiting .

Warnings / Precautions

Idarubicin is not recommended for use during pregnancy or lactation. It should be used with caution in patients with any pre-existing liver disease, kidney disease, heart disease, blood disorders or any allergy. Therapy should not be initiated until patient recover normal hematopoiesis after bone merrow depression. It should be used with caution in patient with dental diseases. IM injection should not be administered to the patients receiving idarubicin.

Interference in Pathology

Idarubicin (HCl) may interfere in the diagnosis of Liver Function Test (LFT) .
