Bromocriptine (Mesylate) is the 2-bromo derivative of a-ergocryptine. Bromocriptine an ergotamine (an alkaloid with vasoconstrictor action), is a dopamine agonist and mimics the action of dopamine. The effects of bromocriptine are similar to those fo Levodopa. The drug produces little effects in patients who do not react to Levodopa. But Bromocriptine (Mesylate) is often used with Levodopa in patients responding to drug therapy.

Distribution: Bromocriptine (Mesylate) has a volume of distribution is 1-3.7 l/kg. plasma protein binding is 96%.

Elimination: it is metabolised via Hepatic, plasma half-life is 15 hr, renal excretion is 6%.

Side Effects

Bromocriptine (Mesylate) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Parkinsonism , Pleural effusion .

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Bromocriptine (Mesylate) are Vomiting, Drowsiness, Hallucinations , Postural hypotension, Dizziness, Nausea, Sweating .

Bromocriptine (Mesylate) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Confusion, Dizziness, Fatigue, Hallucination , Nausea, Postural hypotension, Vomiting .

Warnings / Precautions

Bromocriptine should be used with caution in patients with history of heart attack, angina (heart pain), liver disease, kidney disease, psychiatric illness or circulation problems in the fingers in cold weather. This medication should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy. This drug is not recommended during lactation.
