Pygeum africanum
Toxicological studies have shown very good tolerability after oral administration. Administration of Pygeum to dog and rat subjects equivalent to 560 times the therapeutic dose for six-month periods resulted in no adverse effects on hematological, biochemical, or anatomical/ pathological parameters. The extract had no effect on fertility in male rats and rabbits at doses up to 80 mg/kg/day -- a safety margin of 50 times the therapeutic dose. Furthermore, in vivo and in vitro mutagenicity studies showed a complete absence of mutagenic or clastogenic potential. In fact, many of the constituents of Pygeum have anticarcinogenic and antimutagenic properties in vitro and in vivo.
