Description

Zanthoxylum armatum D.C. Small tree or shrub, spiny. Leaves foliate, pellucid-punctate, petiole and rachis winged. Leaflets sessile, opposite, elliptic to ovate-lanceolate, entire to crenate, acute. Flowers axillary, minute. Male flowers stamens 6-8, female flowers ovary 1-3 locular, lobed, c. 3 mm diameter, pale red, splitting into two when ripe. Seeds rounded, 3 mm in diameter, shining black(218). Fruits dehiscent, small and oval, surface wrinkled and pitted, colour brownish, dark externally and brown within. It has a small woody stalk at its base and is bifid from the top down to more than half its length*. Bark comprises irregular flat pieces of various sizes, externally brownish, consists of several layers of a brownish-red colour, corky and spongy
