Description

Piper nigrum Linn.. A branching, climbing perennial shrub. Branches stout, trailing and rooting at the nodes. Leaves entire, 12.5-17.5 cm long and 5.0-12.5 cm wide, sometimes glaucous beneath, base acute, cordate or rounded, equal or unequal. Female often bears 2 anthers and the male a pistillode. Flowers in slightly interrupted glabrous spikes (5-15 cm). Fruits globose or ovoid, bright red when ripe, seeds usually globose, albumen hard and testa thini168).
