Carbachol is a muscarinic and nicotinic agonist. It has a carbamic acid etser link which is not readily susceptible to hydrolysis by cholinesterases. It has all the pharmacologic properties of acetylcholine. Carbachol is used to reduce intraocular pressure in the treatment of glaucoma.

Side Effects

Carbachol in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hypotension , Bradycardia , Explosive defecation, Hypothermia , Profuse sweating .

Carbachol is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Asthma, Blurred vision, Bullous keratopathy, Burning, Ciliary spasm, Corneal clouding, Decrease in visual acuity, Diarrhea, Eye Pain , Headache, Intestinal cramps, Stinging, Stomachache , Transient fall in BP.

Warnings / Precautions

Carbachol should be used with caution in patients with eye problems, asthma, intestinal disease, ulcers, low or high blood pressure, heart disease, hyperthyroidism, seizures, Parkinsons disease or an obstruction of the urinary tract. Before having surgery with a general anesthetic, tell the doctor or dentist about the use of carbachol. Do not allow anyone else to use this medication. It is classified as pregnancy category C and should be used during pregnancy or lactation only if clearly needed.
