Temazepam is oral benzodiazepine used as a hypnotic agent in the short-term management of insomnia.Temazepam is often preferable to flurazepam for insomnia, particularly in the elderly or patients with liver disease, because it has a shorter half-life and does not have active metabolites. It was approved by the FDA in 1981.

Absorption: Temazepam has an oral bioavailability is 96.5% (±1.5%), pre-systemic (first-pass) metabolism accounts for 0.5% (±0.5%).

Distribution: Temazepam has a volume of distribution is 1.3 - 1.5 l/kg. plasma protein binding is 76 - 96 %.

Elimination: it is metabolised via Hepatic, plasma half-life is 5.3 - 11.5 hr, renal excretion is 80 %.

Indications

Temazepam is primarily indicated in conditions like Insomnia, Nausea, vertigo, labyrinthine disorders, Premedication before surgery.

Temazepam is also indicated for secondary conditions like Surgery.

Contraindications

Temazepam is contraindicated in conditions like Pulmonary insufficiency.

Side Effects

Temazepam in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Hypotension , Blood dyscrasias , Jaundice .

Temazepam is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Nystagmus .

Warnings / Precautions

Patient should observe caution while driving or performing other task requiring alertness because it may produce dizziness. Administer temazepam with caution in severely depressed patients. Limit repeated prescriptions without adequate medical supervision

Interference in Pathology

Temazepam may interfere in the diagnosis of Abnormal LFTs .
