Elimination: it is metabolised via Hepatic, plasma half-life is 2-3 hr, renal excretion is 3%.

Indications

Methylergometrine (Maleate) is primarily indicated in conditions like Postabrortal haemorrhage, Postpartum haemorrhage, Postpartuum haemorrhage, Uterine bleeding, Uterine subinvolution.

Methylergometrine (Maleate) is also indicated for secondary conditions like Uterine atonia.

Side Effects

Methylergometrine (Maleate) in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Vascular complications , Ischemia, Gangrene , Cold extremities.

Methylergometrine (Maleate) produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Coma, Seizures , Nausea, Vomiting, Hypertension, Hypotension, Diarrhea. Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Methylergometrine (Maleate) are Nausea, Vomiting, Seizures, Angina , Confusion , Unconsciousness, Palpitations , Dizziness, Hypertension, Gangrene , Dyspnea, Vasoconstriction of the extremities.

Methylergometrine (Maleate) is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal pain, Angina, Chest pain, Headache, Nausea, Palpitation, Shortening of breath, Tinnitus, VertigoX, Vomiting .

Warnings / Precautions

Methylergometrine should not be used for the induction of labor or during the first stage of labor. Its use should be avoided in patients with eclampsia. IV injection should be given slowly. The drug should be administered under careful obstetric supervision to shorten the third stage of the labor after the delivery of the anterior shoulder of the fetus.
