Indications

Hydroflumethiazide is primarily indicated in conditions like Disorders of calcium balance, Edema, Heart failure, Hypertension, Oedema.

Hydroflumethiazide is also indicated for secondary conditions like Diabetes insipidus.

Contraindications

Hydroflumethiazide is contraindicated in conditions like Diabetes mellitus, Hypokalaemia.

Side Effects

Hydroflumethiazide in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Acute interstitial pulmonary edema , Atherosclerosis , Cholestatic jaundice , Necrotising vasculitis , Pancreatitis , Photosensitivity , Skin rashes , Thrombocytopenia .

Hydroflumethiazide produces potentially life-threatening effects which include Hyponatremia, Hypokalemia, Cardiac arrhythmias, Abnormal lipid profile, Hypoplastic Anemia . Careful monitoring is needed with proper medical management.

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Hydroflumethiazide are Hypotension, Volume depletion, Renal failure, Hypokalemia , Hyponatremia.

Hydroflumethiazide is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Dizziness, Gout, Headache, Impotence, Nausea, Night cramps, Polyuria, Thirst.

Warnings / Precautions

Thiazide diuretics increase sensitivity to sunlight, so avoid prolonged sun exposure, use a sunscreen and wear protective clothing. This medication should be used during pregnancy or lactation only if clearly needed. It should be used with caution in patients with gout or diabetes or any allergies especially to sulfa medications. Avoid any drugs that increase heart rate or cause excitation like decongestants (present in cough or cold products) because it may counter-act the blood pressure medicine.

Interference in Pathology

Hydroflumethiazide may interfere in the diagnosis of False Low values in GLC assay of Urinary oestriol .
