Sertindole is an antipsychotic drug that is an antagonist at central dopamine, serotonin, and adrenergic receptors. It was used in the treatment of schizophrenia, but its marketing was suspended due to cardiac arryhthmias and cardiac deaths associated with its use.

Side Effects

Sertindole is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abnormal ejaculation, Dizziness, Dry mouth, Dyspnea, Extra pyramidal symptoms, Paresthesias, Postural hypotension, Rhinitis , Seizures.

Warnings / Precautions

Sertindole should be used with caution in patients with hepatic impairmen (slower titration and lower maintenance dose in mild to moderate hepatic impairment; avoid in severe); diabetes;correct hypokalaemia or hypomagnesaemia before treatment. Caution is also required in patients with cardiovascular disease, monitor blood pressure during dose titration and early maintenance therapy (risk of postural hypotension); history of epilepsy; it should be used with caution in the elderly. DRIVING: Drowsiness may affect performance of skilled tasks (e.g driving or operating machinery), especially at start of treatment; effects of alcohol are enhanced. WITHDRAWL: Withdrawl of antipsychotic drugs after long-term therapy should always be gradual and closely monitored to avoid the risk of acute withdrawl syndrome or rapid relapse.
