Sodium Alginate is used in combination with an antacid or histamine H-2 receptor antagonist such as cimetidine in the management of gastro-esophageal reflux disease. Sodium Alginate is used in the form of a mixed calcium-sodium salt of alginic acid as a hemostatic and wound dressing. Sodium Alginate is used in pharmaceutical manufacturing as a suspending and thickening agent.

Warnings / Precautions

There is a possibility of reduced efficacy in patients with very low levels of gastric acid. If symptoms do not improve after seven days, the clinical situation should be reviewed. Treatment of children younger than 12 years of age is not generally recommended, except on medical advice.
