Sodium Citrate is expectorant and urinary alkilinizer. Sodium Citrate is a mild purgative and used in constipation. Sodium Citrate is also used as alkalinizing agent in cystitis. Sodium Citrate is used as an expectorant, also used in the treatment of some kidney diseases, lead poisoning and gout.

Sodium Citrate is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Diarrhea, Hypernatremia, Looseness of bowel, Metabolic alkalosis.

Warnings / Precautions

Sodium citrate should be used with caution in patient with kidney, heart or liver disease, Addison's disease, high blood pressure, if patient is on a sodium restricted diet and of any drug allergy. This drug should be used only when clearly needed during pregnancy.
