Fluvastatin is antihyperlipidimic agent. Fluvastatin is a structural analog of HMG-CoA (3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-coenzyme). It lowers high blood cholesterol levels (High levels of cholesterol cause the blockade of arteries of heart) and prevents coronary atherosclerosis and reduces risk of heart attack.

Absorption: Fluvastatin has an oral bioavailability is 98%, pre-systemic (first-pass) metabolism accounts for 35% (±35%).

Distribution: Fluvastatin has a volume of distribution is 0.42 l/kg. plasma protein binding is >99%.

Elimination: it is metabolised via Hepatic, plasma half-life is 2.3 hr, renal excretion is 6%.

Side Effects

Fluvastatin in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Rhabdomyolysis , Angioedema , Myopathy , Anaphylaxis .

The signs and symptoms that are produced after acute overdosage of Fluvastatin are Hepatitis, Pancreatitis.

Fluvastatin is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal pain, Blurred vision, Dizziness, Dyspepsia , Dyspnea, Elevation of liver enzymes, Headache, Insomnia, Myalgia, Myopathy, Nausea, Nausea and vomiting, Skin rash.

Warnings / Precautions

Fluvastatin should be used with caution in patients with liver disease, severe infection, kidney disease, heart disease, hypothyroidism or any allergies. Heavy drinking of alcohol can increase blood levels of fluvastatin, do not drink heavily while taking fluvastatin. Fluvastatin should not be used during pregnancy or lactation. It should be discontinued if there is marked increase in serum aminotransferases.
