Estrogens are important in the development and maintenance of the female urogenital system and secondary sex characteristics. Conjugated estrogen is a mixture of estrogens (hormone), obtained exclusively from natural sources, blended to represent the average composition of material derived from pregnant mare's urine. It contains the sodium salts of water soluble sulfate esters of estrone, equilin and 17 a-dihydroequilin, together with smaller amounts of 17a estradiol, equilenin, 17ß dihydroequilin, 17ß dihydroequilenin, 17ß estradiol and delta 8, 9 dehydroestrone. The pharmacologic effects of conjugated estrogens are similar to those of endogenous estrogens.

Indications

Estrogens Conjugated is primarily indicated in conditions like Oestrogen deficiency, Osteoporosis, Urethritis, Vaginitis.

Estrogens Conjugated is also indicated for secondary conditions like Abnormal uterine bleeding.

Contraindications

Estrogens Conjugated is contraindicated in conditions like Breast cancer, Genital tract bleeding, Thromboembolism, Thrombophlebitis.

Side Effects

Estrogens Conjugated in overdosage may give rise to further complications which include Pancreatitis , Cholestatic jaundice , Cholestatic jaundice .

Estrogens Conjugated is known to cause more or less tolerable side effects which are usually transient. These include Abdominal cramps, Alopecia, Amenorrhea, Bloating , Breakthrough bleeding, Chloasma , Menstrual irregularity, Nausea, Rashes , Spotting , Vomiting .

Warnings / Precautions

Estrogen conjugate should be used with caution in patients with medical history, including family medical history, especially breast lumps and cancer, high blood pressure, diabetes, asthma, epilepsy (seizures), migraine headaches, liver, heart or kidney disease, depression, toxemia (high blood pressure during pregnancy), jaundice (yellowing of skin or eyes) during pregnancy, excessive weight gain and fluid retention during the menstrual cycle or if have uterine fibroid tumors. Before having surgery, tell the doctor about the use of the drug. Do not use this medication during pregnancy or lactation. This medication may cause fetal harm. Cigarette smoking can increase the chance of blood clots while using this medication (especially in women pass the age of 35). Higher strengths are more likely to cause melasma (darkening of skin), sunlight may intensify this darkening, so avoid prolonged sun exposure and sunlamps. Consult the doctor regarding use of sunscreens and protective clothing.

Interference in Pathology

Estrogens Conjugated may interfere in the diagnosis of Impairment of Glucose Tolerance .
